Upgrade to 1.9.5

Tonight I upgraded this site to Moodle version 1.9.5 So far everything looks fine. The main change in this version is to the Gradebook. There have also been bug fixes. If you want to know more about this version you can read all about it from the link below.

Calendar

As you can see Moodle has it's own default calendar but unfortunatly you currently can't import a web calendar into the Moodle calendar. I use a Google calendar as part of my Google Apps (learnscapepro) so I have decided to create a page and embed my Google calendar into it.

If and when Moodle add this functionality to their calendar I will move back to it. You can find the link to my calendar page under "Main Menu" or below here.

Dipping my toes in the world of Linux

Last week I installed Linux Ubuntu making my computer duel boot between Windows XP and Ubuntu. I found that it was a painless operation and I was soon up and running using Linux programs. My first real observation was that the Linux version of Firefox rendered websites faster than the Windows version. The email program Evolution that comes with Ubuntu is very nice with plenty of options.

It just feels even at this early stage that Ubuntu is much more stable than Windows. I am slowly adding other programs and as I continue to learn more about Ubuntu I will write about my experiences. I will also add a course here which I will use to add Linux resources.

If you have been contemplating taking a look at Linux my suggestion is don't wait any longer because I think you will be pleasantly surprised. You don't need to be a techo geek to get it running. I will add a resource showing the steps i took to get my install running.

Upgrade to 1.9.4

Last night I upgraded this site to Moodle version 1.9.4 This is a point version upgrade that fixes some bugs and security issues as well as some minor feature changes. If your running your own Moodle site you should read the upgrade information at Moodle.org and consider upgrading your site. If you find any issues with this upgrade please let me know.

Lively's users created thousands of cafes, bars, discos, tropical islands, treehouses, space stations, galleries, bedrooms and more. Lively's users shared their rooms with people from all over the real world, meeting and chatting with each other via their customized avatars.

The experiment ended December 31, 2008"

As you can see from the above quote taken from the Google Lively site the experiment has come to an end. I am sorry to see it go as I thought Lively had promise and I hoped to use it as part of my elearning projects.

Skype 4.0 beta 3

I have used Skype for a number of years now and find it great for voice or video chat accross the net. Skype is currently going through the beta stage of its next version. They have just released beta 3. I have been testing it and so far it works well. If you are familiar with Skype you will find that the new version has alot of changes to the interface. I have taken a screen shot I have of course blurred out some private information from my contact list.

In an earlier post I asked the question do you twitter? I have been using Twitter for a while now and today i added a badge to the right hand side of the site which shows my latest tweets. If you deside to create your own Twitter account you can add me to your followers. My Twitter URL is below.

Twitter is being used in a number of ways from micro blogging to marketing as well as providing up to date news. During the recent US elections the commercial TV networks even used Twitter. Can Twitter be used for elearning? Why not set up an account and give it a try. Let me know how you get on.

Site Upgrade Moodle 1.9.3+

I just completed a site upgrade from Moodle 1.9.2+ to 1.9.3+ You won't see anything much from the front but I am sure there were bugs crushed. If you are interested in finding out what has changed with the new version and what bugs have been crushed I have included a link to Moodle.org release notes. I will just spend a few hours makeing sure evrything is stable but it looks good so far If you see any problems let me know.

Open Office 3.0

On Monday OpenOffice 3.0 will be released.

OpenOffice has now been formerly released. You can now download it from their website at http://www.openoffice.org at the moment there is heavy demand for the new version.

"This latest suite includes support for the latest Microsoft Office Word format (.docx), documents saved in the latest version of Microsoft’s Office suite, 2007 (or 2008 on Mac OS X) can now be opened in OpenOffice. Zooming similar to that available in Microsoft Office 2007 is available as well as a new Start Center and status bar. Even rudimentary support for VBA is included. As per usual, OpenOffice allows you to export your documents to PDF, something that Microsoft Office lacks.

In the current climate of ‘less is more’ referring to cloud computing, for instance Google’s online office suite Google Docs; OpenOffice holds an almost perfect balance between features and simplicity. OpenOffice uses less than 200 MB of your hard drive with a complete install while a Microsoft Office 2007 installation with similar features will hover nearer the 1,500 MB mark."
